BOOK DESIGN.

This book explores how Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland has had a long lasting impact on the cultural world today, in terms of shaping today’s children’s literature.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a widely beloved British children’s book by Lewis Carroll, that was published in 1865. With its fantastical tales and riddles, it became one of the most popular works of English-language fiction. It was notably illustrated by British artist John Tenniel. The narrative, structure, characters and imagery have had huge influence on popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

The Victorians are credited with “inventing childhood”, partly via their efforts to stop child labour and the introduction of compulsory education. As children began to be able to read, literature for young people became a growth industry, with not only established writers producing works for children. Children’s literature wasn’t as expansive and adventurous as it is today back in the Victorian era. Books that were targeted towards children were about discipline and obedience, and warned children about what would happen if they sinned. Lewis Carroll was one of the first to build stories around children’s enjoyment.

The design of the book is derived from Victorian manuscripts, and Lewis Carroll’s life as a mathematician and involvement with the Church.
